food.
October 20, 2007
10 am-4 pm.
Free.
Bay Area Book Artists (BABA) and Foothill College's Print & Book Arts program are pleased to invite art- and book-lovers of all ages to the 6th Annual Book Arts Jam at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills on Saturday, October 20, 2007, from 10am to 4pm. This one-day celebration of the book arts is free and open to all members of the community.
Over 50 exhibitors will display unique and limited edition books, 'zines, handmade paper, fine art prints, assembled ephemera and bookworks that challenge conventional views of what it means to "be a book." Visitors can engage directly with letterpress printers, prominent regional artists and craftspeople, and representatives of Bay Area book arts organizations. "I had never seen book arts before, but I learned a lot at the demos, plus I did my holiday shopping," beamed Andre Salazar, a San Francisco resident, and visitor to last year's Book Arts Jam. "We hosted over 500 visitors at last year's event and we plan for even more attendees this year," noted event coordinator and BABA member, Deborah Kogan. "If there's one Bay Area event where you can reach a broad audience for book arts, this is the best show," states exhibitor Jennie Hinchcliff of San Francisco's Pod Post, "and this year we're excited to offer our new bento-box of mail art." (See www.podpodpost.com)
Bay Area Book Artists will also provide demonstrations of numerous book arts skills-including sewing a fine binding, making gelatin prints, capturing images using a pinhole camera, folding a book out of a single sheet of paper, and more. Each session provides a "behind-the-scenes" look at the creative processes, tools, and techniques used in book arts. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to learn, explore and create. One of the most popular hands-on demonstrations, which will return by popular demand, is "The Edible Book."
The Book Arts Jam is funded in part by a grant from Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the National Endowment for the Arts, and is co-sponsored by the Bay Area Book Artists and Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California.
